Fillings : A tooth can become decayed by bacteria in the mouth.  This decay must be removed and filled with special dental materials in order for the tooth to return to its' original healthy state.  The two most common filling materials are amalgam and composite resins. Amalgam (Silver) Fillings : The traditional material used to fill a cavity (decay) is a mixture of many metals including silver, tin and mercury. Most fillings today are done with composite resins.

Composite (White) Fillings : These fillings are done with a mixture of plastic resins and have been used for many years. These fillings are just as strong and last just as long as amalgam fillings without the exposure to mercury.  Patients with white fillings also experience less sensitivity after the operation.  Doctor Eddy places mostly composite fillings for both the cosmetic appearance and lack of exposure to mercury.

Root Canals (Endodontics) : A cavity which is not treated can become large enough to reach the nerve at the center of the tooth.  This can lead to an infection called an abscess.  The only way to save the tooth at this point is to have a root canal.  A root canal involves removing the nerve from the canal of each root of the tooth.  The canals are then filled in with a special material.  The tooth is now considered non-vital (dead).  A tooth which has had a root canal will eventually need a post & core, and a crown (cap) or the tooth may fracture.
