Temporary crowns are a necessary part of the crown placement process, which takes two appointments spread over a few weeks. At your first appointment, your tooth will be trimmed to prepare for your permanent crown.
Dr. Annese will take impressions of this tooth and send them to a dental lab so that your permanent crown can be built to fit into your mouth perfectly. But this will take a few weeks, and until then, the newly-trimmed tooth is quite delicate and vulnerable.
So the solution is to use a temporary crown to cover up the tooth. These pre-fitted resin crowns are strong enough to cover up the tooth and protect it, while still being flexible and easy to remove during your final consultation.
This depends entirely on how long it takes to have your permanent crown built by our partner dental lab. This is usually a period of about 2-3 weeks, but there are some situations when you’ll wear your crown for a longer or shorter period of time.
Temporary crowns are made of a relatively flexible dental resin, and are attached to your tooth with a temporary adhesive that’s easy to remove, so removing the crown is quite easy. Dr. Annese will use a special tool that fits around the edge of the crown, and then wiggle it around to break the adhesive seal and pop the crown off of your tooth. The entire process usually takes less than a minute.
Not at all. Temporary crowns are intended to be removed, and they don’t require a lot of force or effort to remove. You may feel a little bit of pressure on your tooth as Dr. Annese loosens the tooth, but you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.
